Anyone have an opinion on the colour of these cam guides? I know the ones on my 944 S2 are a lot lighter and that darker colour is indicative of age but these ones are both extremely even in colour like they were made that way. Also, the groves in them are maybe 1 mm tops. The car has about 70K miles and just had a $7K "do everything possible" maintenace. I know the valve cover was off during the full meal deal so I assume they would have looked at these guides.
This is when I discovered the broken rubber fuel rail bolt mount that looks like it's press fit into the vavle cover but can't seem to get out.

How many miles since the big service?
Those grooves look a little deep to have been recently replaced.
I would suspect the bottom pad has deeper grooves.
The mount screws in. Before it was broken, it was 3 pieces bonded together: a male screw, the cylinder of rubber, and a tapped end cover. Put a drop or two of penetrating oil where its threaded into the head before you screw the part out.
I can't help with the color interpretation. But don't worry, someone will chime in.

It has only 2000 Km since the service. I know that pads weren't replaced by the wear but the colour throws me as it's so even unlike my S2 where you can definitly see the mottled colour changes.

Excellent! I was lightly tapping it last night thinking it was a press fit. There is not much to grab onto as it's tucked right against the case but at least now I know to get a chisel and tap it CCW.
S2 ones are a lighter colour,, BUT they DONT fit the 968.. different part no + shape...
The ones in the pic look like they need changing... At least the top one does, [grooved],and as another poster mentioned the bottom one will no dought need doing aswell....
They are both the same part... Top + bottom...
How do i know.

Looks like you have to remove the cams to do it so I'll probably leave it alone and get it done. It's just sitting there with 4 bolts but I see no way to releave the cam chain pressure without pulling the cams. I seem to recall my S2 guides being a ridiculous price for a piece of nylon, did you find the same with the 968 versions?
My recollection is that the pieces are quite modestly priced. You do have to remove the cams to change the pads.
IIRC the pads are under $40 each.
Yes, you have to remove the cams.
Do a search there is a write up on how to service the pads a retime the cams (cam timing is the hardest part, you will need dial indicators).
Mine were that color @ 95k and so were the others I've seen.

Yea they look like that was the factory colour. There is a new Porsche mechanic that just joined our PCA region so I might give him a quick email and get his comments.
