Full Version: How much did you spend on repairs and maintenance for your 968 in 2008?

There have been a number of threads about how much it costs to maintain a 968 over the years, which got me to thinking. Could we pin it down a bit?



So here's the deal. Add up how much you spent on maintenance and repairs last year. Cosmetic updates and upgrades don't count, so please exclude them.



Fuel costs don't count, as they're too variable.



Maintenance and repairs only please.



New rims don't count, unless you trashed yours. Tires are fair game as long as you really needed them, not just wanted a bigger size etc.



I'll go back at some point and calculate an average cost based on responses, which will help the new guys who are always asking.



Yes, I know it will be biased, because there are more [color="blue"]checkbook[/color] mechanics here, than more [color="blue"]DIY[/color] types.



If you want to add details such as year, model and major expenses feel free. I'm not sure how to tally that, but it will certainly be interested to look for trends.

Fixed it.
Nothing but normal maint items for me last year (oil, filters ect..).
I head my head rebuilt, all the lifters replaced, new timing and balance shaft belts and balance shafts resealed @ 129K miles.

Maintenance this year was belts, Balance Shaft Seals, new brake pads and Toyo T1R tires.



"non-standard" Maintenance included; Windscreen, RS Barn Header, RSB Stage 2 chip, Drilled Rotors, and several other go fast goodies....

Sometimes it is better not to look.

I have not tallied up all my receipts from the beginning, I do know that is all I did last year.
Zero in '08. ( only spent money on accessories for it ).

But those of you that know me, spending zero is easy to explain - I change oil maybe every 25k miles, I don't believe in preventive maintenance ( except I do plan to replace the belts every 50k or 60 k miles ..), so I pretty much live by the philosophy <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> " if it ain't broke... don't f*** with it " . Might be ultimately a riskier and costlier way to treat things that way, but so far I've been pretty lucky. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
A/C upgrade to R134 (existing system crapped out)

head gasket, valve guides, etc

oil pan gasket

new wires between battery/starter/alternator/fuse block

replaced entire exhaust system because it was same price as new cat (mine broke) from Germany

alternator rebuild and new voltage regulator

replaced three coolant hoses

replaced right half of gauge cluster in dash
Interesting survey - I had the following preventive services done in July:



- State Inspection & emission test

- Low yearly maintenance (12,885 miles)

- 2 year Brake Fluid Flush

- Airbag Check

- Replaced battery (6 years in service, better safe than sorry)



Total, with PCA discount, was $537 and change. Yeah, I am one of those owners that has all the maintenance stamps in my owners manual, since I bought the car new. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Post purchase service to set baseline : Belts, liquids, filters and plugs +-2kUSD
Just oil changes in 2008 - though its going in Thursday for new belts & rollers. Its been five years since I replaced them and about 35K (now its has just over 55K)- just piece of mind...considering a variocam inspection while its in...I also have stainless brake lines, clutch line, brake bias valve to install. I am planning on changing the fuel filter, spark plugs, coil, and maybe the plug wires. So 2009 will be a little higher... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Here's my list for the past year:



Install Guards Torque Biasing differential

Install new flywheel (DMF - OE) and clutch disc

Replace belts, front seals - not water pump

Install RSB steel clutch hose

Install new front motor mounts



I am not including oil and coolant changes.



All told, it's $4,500-$5,000 over about 14 months time. The good news is that at just 70K miles, I have bought myself many more years of fun.
I was around 4-5k with some general maintenance and clutch replacement. I could have spent a lot less on the clutch, but I figure while I am in there I might as well do it right. I replaced everything in there with RSbarn stuff and factory stuff when needed. Now I have to do the front of the engine in the next couple months. That will be another chunk of change.
not including the turbo project and new transaxle and interior rebuild and stereo and engine polishing and drilled rotors/pads/lines and new windshield and new headlight and new driver door:





Basic maint: 49$ (air filter and oil filter and oil change!!!)
Purchased in 08 and baselined. Cam belts, oil cooler hoses, and tires mostly.
I won't add my 2008 tally because I bought a 968 cab.... I would skew the results!
Well this may be therapeutic just to say it.................I spent:

Timing belts the stuff and other belts that go with it.

Tuneup and front brakes

Lets not forget the Flywheel Damper
