The Cab has been a shop over a week now. They're having trouble removing the old damper. It is held on by a metric allen head bolt that is stripped. Limited amount of space to work, even with a lift. They say that it's a replacement damper in there and whoever installed it used the wrong Allen wrench when installing the bolt and stripped out the hex pattern. Kind of bummed since that means this car has been chewing up a damper every 40K miles or so.

Any thoughts on what kind of abuse can lead to early failure of these things? I wonder what else is destined to fail because of PO abuse.
I believe it's time more than abuse that wears them out. You can't be sure the mechanic didn't strip it either..

If installed properly it will last. These cars will have expensive problems but they are also built to last. I expect my transmission to last forever.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I do hope mine will stay for another 10 years or longer!

Hate to do such job in the future. The previos owner has paid for it. I do not hope that I will have that failure again in the future. Must stay longer than 80.000 miles I suppose......

4Matic is it possible for you to take good pictures from the old damperplate? Maybe you can remove the rubber parts so we can look inside what is in?

Maybe there is another fix for this damper in the future. Or maybe the damper is rebuildable into another setting.

I'm curious about it.

Don't have the old one. It's just a big rubber circle with a metal thing in the middle and a metal ring around it. No way to fix or get around replacement.

That rubber must be very strong if it can handle the torque from the engine. It thought that there were more parts mounted inside the rubber.

Thanks 4matic for the information
