Any 968s in Ecuador
#1

Will be travelling to Ecuador in a few weeks with Engineers Without Borders. I'll be flying into Quito; working in a small village on the north coast. Just wondering if there are any members on this forum from that area of the world.

Engineers Without Borders? Seriously? To distribute pocket protectors to disadvantaged individuals overseas? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> It's terrible the image the media portrays of us.

Seriously, what does this organization do? Provide expertise on infrastructure issues and the like, perhaps?

Cloud, you gave me my first good chuckle of the day. Thanks

Engineers Without Borders does a lot of things, but the two main initial tasks are to get the community a good, reliable, clean and safe water supply. The second task is then to work with the community on sanitation issues, which covers a wide range of issues from cleanliness, washing ,latrines, and other simple health related concerns. Any of these might include basic structural design as applies to hurricanes or earthquakes. Many communities around the world don't even have these basics needed for a healthy survival. So, they are the main focus.

Of course natural phenomina can occassionally occur and thus after the water and sanitation are achieved, the focur could shift to structures in areas where this can be an issue. Many times the materials available are rudimentary, so it may be easier for a latrine design to spend the $'s to get the in ground part where it doesn't leach out to local water supply sources, but make the top structure simple so that it is lost in an "event", but is easy to reconstruct in a day or so. Houses or course you'd prefer to stand up to an event; there are techniques to have the 4 corners survive and any upper floor, but to make the walls sacrificial.

I doubt there are any 968 owners in Equador.

Interestingly enough, Ecuador was on my mind this morning. As I was eating a banana I noticed that the sticker said it came from Ecuador. The picture of large banana groves came to mind as well as thoughts of Brazil...

Knew that we have a member from S. America in Chile, so thought I'd give it a shot just in case.

Where as we may not have any members from Ecuador, there are certainly 968s there. A google reveals a yellow 1995 for sale with 40k miles on it for a nice(?) price of $45K USD.

Ironically it may sell at that price in Ecuador, whereas here it probably does not have a prayer above 25k, IMO..

MB, a highly admirable thing to do... A lot of people express empathy for causes of this nature, but few are as commited and go to the lengths you are to make a difference. ( can't find the " we're not worthy " emoticon on my iPad or I'd insert it here )

It's an easy and rewarding way to give back a little for all the bounty I've enjoyed.
