CR-210/CR-21 with Yatour CD changer emulator
#1

Just wanted to write a quick note about my experience with this setup.

I purchased a second hand Porsche CR-210 head unit, which are not very expensive compared to other Porsche head units. Becker is the supplier of this HU, like most Porsche HU of this era.  I believe this unit came with the base 993.

Unlike other new Becker units the CR-210 (US) and the European version CR-21 do not have the ability to enable an "Aux" manually via the HU interface. However, it does have a CD changer interface that it can control.  I found a device this emulates this Becker CD Changer interface, without requiring you to have an actual CD Changer.

It provides USB Charging (only),  Bluetooth Audio streaming profile, Bluetooth Phone profile.  The unit also comes with an AUX in input which I have yet to get working.  The provided microphone which plugs into the unit does work for phone calls with my iPhone Xr. Playing from Apple Music streaming works fine and using the HU  tracker forward/black does control song selection just fine. The unit also have a Remote input which allows you to initiate calls or answer calls.  I have yet to try this because the kit I bought did not come with a remote.  The remotes seem to be inexpensive on eBay and there are versions which can also control playback in addition to place/answer calls.

The CR-210/CR-21 HU has a illumination input to control lighting when the headlights are on.  I spliced into the Grey illumination wire which powers the Ashtray light and/or the Clock backlight.  It works fine this way and the analog dial on the dash control the brightness of the HU display using this hijacked GRAY input.

All in the project cost ~$280 USD.  < $200 for the US and $80 for the Becker CD changer emulator made by Yatour.

just to be clear. You want to see what the HU looks like in the 968 center console?  Right?

Actually, I would. It has been so long since I have seen a stock unit, I honestly have forgotten how they fit into the general interior design. I know my Pioneer, which is a common replacement, really looks out of place. The plastic is different, the edges don't match, and it looks like it comes from the wrong era, which it kind of does.  And out of curiosity, where does the adapter live in your 968?

The "brick" adapter lives behind the 968 clock as there is plenty of room behind it.   The pocket to the left of the clock goes further back and does have as much room behind it.  So I chose to hide it behind the clock.  It should be quite easy to drive a hole in the pocket and run wires from the brick into that pocket for things like the USB power, microphone, the AUX input (if I ever figure out how to get that working) or the remote.   For now, its all wireless and its fine behind the clock. I can get to it pretty easily without pulling out the stereo and the clock/pocket assembly just pulls out without touching the stereo.   I'll go snap a photo for you.
