spending the day "unplugged"
#1

i have been neglecting the regular change of coolant in my car (supposed to be every 2 years) - finally i decided to get to it while i had the car in the air for other projects - i figured out how not to make a mess just fine - no worries - then it came time to put the plug back in and fill it back up - turing turning turning - RATS!!!!!

snapped that little bugger right off - apparently they are very fragile, especially after having been in there for 15 years

and of course nobody local has one, so i get to overnight a 5 dollar part - oh lucky me

do yourself a favor - buy a new plug before doing this - part number 944.106.353.01

but, by all means, DO IT! the only way to insure a good flowing cooling system is to flush it regularly, using phosphate free coolant and distilled water (no tap water)

Surprisingly, my flush/refill went fine (2 years ago). Looks like I'm up for round 2 now. I'll grab that part before hand.

The more we post about these things the easier life is for all of us in the future.

that was my thought too, and why i posted this thread - i am grumbling right now as the sun is out and i would have LOVED to have taken my car for a spin - it has been since august and i'm getting itchy to drive it

instead i sit here waiting for a 5 dollar part

You could have wadded up some chewing gum, and then put some duct tape over the "patch".

lol - and then been right back in there to do it again next week - thanks

nope - taking a quote and a lesson from my grandfather, and something i've said for 30 years since (it's been "borrowed" elsewhere too) and doing it once, doing it right, and not going back

Obviously I am showing my lack of love for my 968 or I would know the answer to this, but is the drain plug plastic?

Yes, it is plastic...

yeah - it's actually a smart design - the tank on the radiator is plastic - the drain plug is a different kind of plastic, and breaks before you strip the threads in the tank and/or crack the tank
