Actually... 968 vs. 987...
#21

This is a scary read for a future 968 owner. If all goes well my 68 will be delivered early next week. It won't be my daily so I'm hoping the cost of ownership doesn't cause me to loose my joy for what I currently think of as a great driving machine.

yup - lol - my buddy ron absolutely hates cabs - that's ok too - he doesn't have to drive one - i've just been a ragtop guy for way too long now (over 25 years) - pretty tough to change after that

Scary! What the fact that its hard to get 2 sets of clubs in a 968 cab?Just kidding. Some of the witty banter here are just the facts of owning a 50 thousand dollar automobile that is 10 -13 yrs old(they obviously don't cost that much anymore but they still have the maintenance associated with one).If you let the little things get away from you then it can get ugly real fast. The upside is that they are awesome cars that in their day(92-95) were the best technologies Porsche had to offer.Just like the 911,some of the 968s characteristics are timeless and look just as good today as they did when they hit the scene.

I chose my car over a similarly priced Boxster, though it was the early version. Performance on the 968 is actually better, even considering the age. What really did it for me was the exclusivity of the car, though. I like that there are not 4 more of them in my small town, like there are Boxsters. Mine is my daily driver, but I do have a backup. That is what I would recommend for you, as well.

I couldn't agree more in the rarity fact ,as I drive to work and back,I may see as many 10-15 Boxsters(depending on the weather)(don't get me wrong,I love them). As I said in a previous post,I could go a year and not see a 968(after I said that I saw a dark blue cab parked just up the street from where I work).I also agree with the performance comparison.I drove mine to work the other day and one of the guys I work with saw me in his rear veiw mirror and couldn't get over the fact that he didn't know what the car was.He knew it was a Porsche but was confused on the model.

I was considering a 951, but the looks of the 968 keep pulling me back in. Beautiful car.

One point - and an important one in my decisionmaking - that hasn't been made is cockpit comfort. There are few cars - much less sportscars - that have the cockpit room of the 968. I've never been in any other Porsche model that doesn't constrain me in terms of shoulder and arm movement. Plus, headroom, legroom, everything is as good as (or better than) virtually any other car. The front seat of a brand new Jaguar long wheelbase sedan is not as spacious as the 968.

Had a 944 Turbo. In its day it was a badddd car.Great looking too-I think they called the color platinum(before I had a digital camera,I wish I had some(dig.) pics).Lot of bang for the buck(today, but back then it still took some green to get one).It was an 86 and I think they worked some things out with the ensuing models. It was going to cost someone some big bucks in the end(turbo leaking oil, clutch about ready, ect),so I made sure it wasn't me.Maybe a little quicker early than the 968 but not as friendly as an overall driver.Still great car.

A buddy was trying to sell me his 951 so he gave it to me for a week to drive. I liked it OK, it was the 86 217 hp model. I took it for PPI and they said, not bad for a 951, about $4500 and it will be in good working order. The mechanic told me we would be good friends if I bought the car.

That's when I learned about the 968. It took a while but I found one with a $400 PPI list at 62K miles and the wife liked the color (Amazon Green, all chicks dig it).

No major problems, but I don't drive it daily or in the winter at all. In 20K miles it's been great, all minor stuff. I could spend a few grand and really puff it up, seats recovered, paint the chipped up nose, but I prefer to enjoy driving it. Makes me smile every time.

There it is again - the tremendous 968 "smile factor". That's the reason to drive these cars. Three years and nearly 75k miles after purchasing mine, it still makes me smile.

Yeah,I had put more than that into mine and there was much more to do.And,again,I don't want to sound Porsche happy stupid but that is part owning one of those cars.I don't know of anyone who has had one(especially the 86 951) that didn't have that scenario(unless they didn't drive it).But with that said, going from 84 944 na to the 951 was unbelievable difference in feel and performance. What a blast(15 yrs ago that is). After I sold the turbo I found a 87 944 na but it got totaled in accident(with my wife behind the wheel-not her fault).A friend had a 83 944 in mothballs(hiding it from soon to be ex-wife for money purposes) and I talked him into selling to me(pics in my gallery)(had it for 8 yrs) .So when I turned 50 my wife decided I deserved a newer Porsche as a present and this is where the 968 came in.So dig going from a 83 944 na to a 968!Its the gift that keeps on giving!
