a long sigh of satisfaction
#1

new distributor cap and rotor, removed the yellowed chipguards behind my front wheels - looks sooo much better - and swapped out the front blown speakers. turns out a PO had soldered in some Nakamichi 5" speakers, dude these things have HUGE magnets! Much bigger than the Pioneers installed today. Now I can listen to music without the extra percussion track.

Sooo. . . the weather is beautiful, the Pcar is coming along. . . I head to bed tonight with gas in the tank and a smile on my face.

Man I love this car! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Did the cap and rotor cure your 6000 rpm cut out problem ......?

nope. Still cutting out at 6000 after 6 mins of driving. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Here are my next steps, I'm trying to get this resolved for our April 1 run but at this point I dunno

- inspect ECU - get part #, compare with the other 6100 rpm thread

- put in 1/2 a tank of 100 octane

- repeat blink test

- replace o2 sensor

Isn't there a way to reset the ECU? I thought I saw something about that around here.

how's that sound?

How easy was it to replace the front speakers? I didn't even consider replacing them with aftermarket units until you mentioned it. I have a passenger side speaker that is blown and doesn't produce bass at all anymore.

What is actually in the door speaker box? Seems like a bunch of them and in a row. What sizes fit in that box? What did you replace?

not difficult, you just have to take off the panel underneath the armrest (don't need to take off the entire door panel). About 8 screws.

I used some 5 1/4" pioneers I bought from circuit city for $50.

You might have 4" or 5 1/4" in there now. Also check your options codes and see if yo have the 10-speaker option.

Here's what's inside the door speaker enclosure. The large driver is 5 1/4" and the midrange (if you have that option) is 3". You'll need to remove the door panel if you want to get at the tweeter and once you have the armrest panel thing removed, going the rest of the way isn't bad at all. Good luck!

Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes resets the ECU.

you know with my new 5 1/4 pioneers, the rear speakers now sound really tinny in comparison. I believe they are 6 1/2".

I will most likely then replace the rear ones at some point also, probably when I put in a new head unit and subwoofer. Honestly the sound is good enough with the new Pioneers I think I'll wait a while.

Are speakers today just that much better?
