a few oddities

Looking for some comments on a few oddities noted on my white (can you say trouble?) car.



1. When I lift the hood, the fan for the climate control comes on (at whatever speed it is set at) while the hood is opened. If the fan is in the "0" position it does not come on. It goes off when the hood is closed. Is this normal?



2. Say the temp setting for the A/C is at 21C and the air is coming from the dash vents (ie both sliders full left, windshield vent shut). The air coming out is cool (ie about right). If I slide the lower direction slider to supply floor ventilation (ie full right) the heat comes on (ie it gets warmer). The temp dial has NOT been adjusted. Slide it off and the heat goes off. I am sure that my coolant control valve needs to be replaced (one has been ordered, the other day it blew cold air no matter what the temp was set at) but I can't see how the direction of the air flow has anything to do with the temperature.



3. Sometimes the volt gauge seems to drop to just above 12V for a while then come back up to around 13. I have been paying attention to this and it is NOT associated with the cooling fan coming on or the (knowing) use of any electrical component in the car. Seems to do it after the car is warmed up. When cold the voltmeter is normally pegged at about 13.5V.



4. Sometimes, for no particular reason, the A/C will not blow cold air. The switch lights up and the voltmeter shows a power consumption. After a few km of driving and a bit of swearing, together with 5-6 tries of the switch, it works again and will blow cold air indefinitely, even if I shut the A/C off and then back on. It isn't only the car that gets overheated when this happens!

wow - that's almost as good as the "headlights going up and down alternating left to right" problem somebody else had



no, none of that is normal - you definitely have an electrical issue somewhere, and likely it's in a relay, or your car is possesed



pull and clean the relays - then call an exorcist - sacrificing a live chicken may not be out of order

But seriously now (did Joe Walsh get rich off that line?) could bad grounding do any of this?

Hi Kim,



Bob Kovacs did a presentation at 968 celebration last year and declared just about every electrical gremlin to be a result of bad grounds (All 10 points).



I make no claims to any specific mechanical abilities, but I would definately think this would be a good place to start.

So my next plan will be to find and then clean all 10 grounding points.



Another oddity to add to my list -



When I bought this car, a US spec, it had a US speedo. I told the guy I bought it from at Heimrath Performance Cars (beware as thought useful) that I wanted a Canadian speedo. I assumed that this would be a new one. instead, he told me he got a "used" one and reset it to zero. My question is this. If the speedo had come from a 951 or 944S2 (if they used the 300 km/h speedo) I am led to believe the gearing is wrong. My car shows about 8% high (2600 rpm is 108 km/h, gearing chart says it should be about 100 km/h at 2600 rpm. Assuming that the gearing is wrong, can I buy a new gear to convert the reading on the 951 speedo to be correct for a 968?
