CrackerJack 968 motor-Surprise!
#1

Well I finally got around to removing the head today as I decided to take my sweet time. Found a couple of prizes awaiting my eyes.

A nut with a bushing found inside the block oil drain and broken lower variocam guide. Good thing the oil gallery gets smaller the lower in the block it goes. See pics.

Head gasket was in really bad shape with several holes. Only a small hole through the piston ring but enough.

time to go sacrifice a few virgins to the variocam and piston gods, lucky they fell asleep during all this time and you did not end up with a nasty surprise..

( ok, if no virgins, chickens then...might be easier to find... but select flu-free chickens ! )

172k miles. Actually appears to be original miles which would be a shocker to me. But everything appears original so this motor was well taken care off-except for the dropped nut which did not block the oil drain anyhow.

Mostly put back together today. Paragon has my guides and chain as Pelican did not have them in stock. That is the only thing I am waiting on.

Wow, can't believe it has been that long ago since I started this thread. Car has been running great for some time now. Forgot to update this.

Header gasket is not too bad on this car. A bit more involved than the regular 44 series due to the variocam, but still not too shabby.

Head was milled flat.

Thicker head gasket was used.

New rod bearings installed. What the heck.

New gaskets/seals

New belts

The FI seal kit was a chore to aquire. Porsche does not make it but Rennbay had a complete 4 injector seal kit for under $13.00 and I had it overnighted for a bit more.

Started her up a while ago. After some initial coughing and sputtering she is purring along and pulling hard through the gears. Already switched out the water with some coolant mix and another oil change. Will reintriduce synthetic in a few more oil changes.

Car still needs an alignment but that is minor compared to the rest already accomplished.

I cleaned up the motor over the weekend. Here is a picture.

Good job Lee! The Porsche Crest is a nice touch in the engine compartment, should be ready for another 175,000 miles! Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

What and how did you clean the engine up, it looks great. I just did a ring and valve job on mine and now I need to start detailing it.

LeeDye you've got a helluva fleet there! Saw 928 references on your website - is that Shark still in your fleet also?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.

I take pride in my engine compartments. Just a strange person I suppose. To me it is normal. To my neighbors, friends, and family ,well....they don't understand when I have a toothbrush cleaning up the engine.

I start first by putting a small shopping bag around any critical engine compartment areas such as fuse boxes, relays, switches.

Then I cover the fenders and other painted areas. Then spray on a generous dose of Gunk engine cleaner. I prefer the non-foam type myself. Wait 20 minutes and spray with just a hose and nozzle. Not too much pressure as then water gets to places I may not want it to.

Pull the plug wires and make sure all is dry. Make sure connectors are dry. Dry engine up. Sometimes an air compressor works fine if your careful.

Once dried up, I spray the entire engine with Armor All or something similar. Wipe dry and done.

Many things in life I find relaxing. Detailing a motor is one of them. Like I said, some people do not understand. I do each time I pop the hood.

The crest on the cover was from the prior owner. At first I did not like it and was going to remove it. But then.....the more I stared at it the more I liked it. Then I had thoughts of powder coating the valve cover and/or the plug wire cover red. Finally I decided to leave it the way Porsche wanted it except for that crest which I like ...at least today I do.

----------------------

The 928 is gone. I have been contemplating my next purchase as the GS is also gone. Man that was a difficult buyer to deal with. A 928 GT is on the list. Not big on Boxters too much. Supercharge the 968 is on the list as well but I am leaning to a 993 Turbo. Not big on the 996 nowadays though I shopped them prior to the SC purchase. Something about the 993 turbo that has a hold on me. But I have to wait for the new house in a couple of months. Not enough garage space right now.

Your original pic of the head gasket looks just like mine that was just replaced on my 143k mile car. It was pretty shot too!

Engine looks great. If it sounds as good as it looks, you are livin' large again

sigh... wish my engine was that clean.. BUT, I added this crest ( "bling" ?! ) on the air box cover, thinking it'll take away attention from all the grime I keep forgetting to clean.

speaking of engines - I posted a photo of Russ' ex-968 ( now Bo's 968 ) engine a while back, but search did not turn up anything...and I can't find the photo in my PC anywhere.. anyone still have that picture ? If you do, post it - it's a museum showpiece, IMHO !!

That looks good too, Dan! I really like the appearance of the 968 engine compartment. Every time I open my hood at an event a group of admirers comes by to look. good luck, Bob Blackwell.
