968 Front Brakes Set
#1

Hi All, getting ready to put these on EBay, but wanted to offer first to the group. Have the following front brake items to sell:

* Cross-drilled Zimmermans (std 299 mm, not M030s) with only about 10K miles, great condition

* Nice Brembo calipers - paint is intact and looks great, no flaking or peeling, these are very nice

* Original pad backing plates (with the parts that pop into the pistons)

* Original brake lines

All from my '94 coupe that got Big Reds this past spring. It has about 97K miles.

I'm hoping to sell the whole package as a set, maybe to someone upgrading a 944, but open to offers for the individual items too.

Tom,

Any idea of what you want for the set?

Also have you thought of moving the set up to the rear - IIRC the front calipers are the same size as the back ones - but the pistons are larger (more braking power?). Which would be my possible plan, that and I have the bias valve to add sometime soon...

Exactly. I don't know why it's not done more often. Everytime I mention doing it when people switch to big reds, they usually look at me with bewilderment. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> The calipers are the same front to rear, but the pistons are larger on the fronts which give a better mechanical advantage just like upgrading to big reds.

Hi Sam, I think I've seen a pkg like this bringing about $200 on EBay. Does that sound reasonable?

BTW, yes, I have heard the idea of moving to the rear. Aren't the rear rotors quite a bit narrower than the fronts? If they do fit in back, that would make a great set up with the larger pistons and the 5/33 bias valve.

Tom,

Let me look into the rotor fit - I 'll get back to you tomorrow.

The calipers are identical with the exception of piston diameter. The rotors are not different thicknesses, but even if they were, the pistons push the pads out until they make contact, that is why when the pads wear, they adjust. There are no limitations.

actually the rear thickness spec is 24mm versus the front of 28

i've been thinking on this, and i think i hit a snag

since the front rotors are thicker, that means the caliper gap might be bigger too - you'll have to check the mounting faces to see if the lateral location is the same - otherwise you might need to shave off the extra 2mm of shoulder to keep the rotor centered over the mounting location - then it might be too weak

lol - eric - why don't you get right on that and let us know?

if the gap is the same, then it would probably be fine

lol - of course this likely means another bias valve change

Tom,

Looks like I need to do a litle more investigation on this, I will try and find some time this weekend to get the wheels off - but if you need/want to move on this don't wait on me...

Thanks Again
