968 Forums Member Map
#1

One of the best features of 968forums.com is the networking of its members that it promotes and facilitates. The ease of use and ability to reach out and connect with other owners is one of the things that makes this site stand out from the rest.

We have added another tool to help that. It has been a long way coming, but there were a few "issues" that we had to resolve to provide the tool without infringing on the security of others. Other maps had been tried, but they had security problems, and provided too close of a Zoom View for the comfort of some..

We have resolved that.

Our new found hero is the member whose screen name is "<b>J.C.</b>". We want to thank him in advance for what we are sure will be a daunting task.

He has taken on the project of creating the Map and maintaining it. He is the "<b>Map Master</b>", and will be responsible for all things regarding the Map. He can be reached via <b>PM</b>. Please do not contact the Site Administrator or Site Owners for changes to the Map, as they will only direct you to the Map Master.

Being the biggest and busiest 968 website means that we have a lot of people using it to connect to other owners. That means a lot of work for J.C. Please give him some time to update the database, and/or add you in. He will generally be doing the work once a week.

Further, since we shut the door on non-members, lurkers, and such, only authorized members who have been granted access can view the profiles, so the information provided there can only be seen by them.

You can have pics from your profile, a link to your Personal Home Page (Facebook, etc), as well as your City (or Zip Code), State, and if you want, your real name (otherwise it will be only your Screen Name). The content is all, of course, subject to the same guidelines as the rest of the board.

The things being input are the things you already have in your profile. This includes Screen Name, City, State, Year, Model, Color, pics in your profile, etc.

We will be listing the locations of shops, provided that there is an appropriate recommendation posted in the "Mechanics Recommendations" section on the board. We will not be providing links to those shops.

We will not be listing commercial websites for anyone not a Commercial Sponsor of this website.

Please note, the locations shown are only as specific as the information input.

If you don't want your specific address shown, simply don't input it. If you only put in "City", then it will pin you at the center of your city. If you put in your Zip Code, it will pin you in the center of your Zip Code. If you put in your address, then people will be able to zoom in to see your fat butt sunning at your pool. If you don't want them to see that (please don't let them see that), then don't input your address, and leave it at City or Zip Code.

This resolves the issue of somebody being able to "zoom in" on your driveway if you don't want them to.

We are already automatically adding in everybody on whom we have information. There are a number of them up already, and more being added as quickly as J.C. can get them up there. We are using the information in your profile. If there is none, there, please update your profile, and then send a PM to the Map Master to let him know you have added it.

If you want to be on the map, but want more current information shown, go into your profile and update it. Then contact the Map Master and let them know you have updated your profile.

If you do not want to be on the map, then you need to contact the Map Master and let him know.

One of the best tools you can have in your toolbox is the phone number of another 968 owner. Hopefully this will help make that happen for you.

Many people have formed some great friendships via this site, hopefully we can help with that too.

Give it a try. You can easily see where people are, get a list of members and their locations, see pics they have put up, make comments, and add your info and photos.

Here is a link to the Map. Enjoy!

Thanks, but the job isn't complete yet. I'm gonna get some headway on it today, but as of this morning, it's "roughly" 6.3% done. I'll post progress on this thread. So y'all know, my plan of attack is to go alphabetically throught he member list, then go through the 'Update your Info" thread (I believe there are about 5 pages now on that thread), and finally cross reference through the New Introductions SINCE the Member Purge Flash did a couple weeks back. If you are deep in the Alpha order and you are on the map, it's because I picked semi-random people for the test run before the announcement of the map. Semi meaning I really wanted to see how many Florida 968s there were and the like.

OK, enough jibber-jabber. I have some data-entry to tackle.

Happy Saturday!

Thanks.... I finished all the Intro guys (minus the new one that posted today) and have gone through about 20 of the 72 pages of members. Basically through "C" Plans are to have the initial data entry done by the end of next week. Maybe sooner. The issue beyond data entry is moving people from being on top of each other in certain cities with mutiple members (LA, SF, Dallas, DC, NY, et al).

Nah, you can add Melbourne to the list of cities I have to get markers off of each other...

yeah - this has been a long time coming - we tripped and stumbled over it a couple of times before j.c. got involved - he then approached me with a better version than we had been messing with - over the last few months j.c. and i have been exchanging messages trying to sort it out and fine tune it - i'm REALLY glad he stepped up to do this - it's a LOT of work and we are very appreciative - we think this is going to be a great resource for the members - they can now see who is in their area, and potentially contact them

we are always contemplating other features to add to the site too - if you think of something, let us know

No prob, guys. I plowed through another 20 pages last night (through to the end of page 40 - marco951), so you never know... you might exist by the end of the night tonight! Of course, that's depending on how good the performances are on "So You Think You Can Dance"...

Quick update:

The map WOULD have been done by tonight, however they are "updating the backbone from Atlanta" for the internet here in B.F.E. East Alabama. I have had no internet at home since Wednesday night (Internet phones are great!). Whenever it gets back up I will knock the rest out. To date, I have added through page 55... MikeR, I think.

OK, guys. Phase 1 is complete. Everyone with locations in their profile has been populated into the map. Phase two is underway. This involves zooming in and moving everyone slightly so that all can be seen - this is mainly in highly-populated areas... L.A, San Diego, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas... yeah, you get it. In the meantime, you can see everyone by clicking on their name in the lefthand column. As mentioned before, if there are edits to your marker, just PM me and I'll get to it ASAP - usually the same day.

Thanks for your patience and enjoy! I already have found people I want to meet or at least get in contact with...

Can you say 968 Tailgate at a Gator game???

It's been almost a month since the last update. 760-ish markers on the map and growing with each new member!

Phase 2 is still underway, but gaining headway now that I am back from summer leave. still getting markers off from atop one another. Basically have the U.S. done, moving onto Europe and then Australia, picking up one-sies and two-sies along the way. However, if you find yourself under someone's marker, let me know and I generally will fix it that day or the next. There's many smaller cities that might get passed over...

P.S. Still looking for takers on a 968-owning-Florida-Gator-fan convoy to a game this fall in Gainesville... No one? ....
