968 Alternator checked around Pasadena CA
#1

Hi,

I pulled my alternator and tried to get it checked at the local Kragens. They couldn't do it.

Anyone out there in the Pasadena CA area know where to get a 968 Alternator checked around here?

Thanks

Okay so I found a rebuild shop on Foothill in East Pasadena called One Stop Auto Electric. They tested the alternator and it was cooked. They are doing a rebuild on my old one and it will be ready by 4:00 today. The rebuild is backed up for a year and cost 160.

wow - no noise, but it was cooked - diode pack? bearing? what was bad?

glad it's getting sorted out though

It was making under a volt but was not making any noise. Everything was replaced but what they said was bad were the diodes and the regulator. The regulator was put in last week! spooky and I am concerned that there is a ground in the line someplace. I will check the resistance in the lines before I install.

good call - that is spooky - not a good sign - that rings like a dead short in a main line

i think i would take a really good look at all the main cables - the housings are known to break down and create a dead short

i think would also disconnect the starter before connecting the battery to isolate that circuit, and continuity check those cables

Well the problem could be anywhere considering the condition of the cable I checked that goes to the alternator. The insulation just crumbles off in your hands when you move it.

Does anyone know if this condition is due to the heat in the engine bay of if it is a general failure by the B team engineers that were tasked to design this wonder?

I am a normally calm engineer that has been working on car of all sorts. I have owned and cared for two Alfas, four Porsches and any number of American and Japanese cars. This by far takes the cake for the most trying and disappointing.

At this point there will be a fair looking White 92 Cab with 78k for sale as soon as I can keep it running for more than a week. Perhaps it is just not the car for me. I'm done.

well, i would definitely replace that cable

i'm really sorry to hear you are having such problems - it is the unfortunate reality of too many of these cars - they were either neglected or subjected to harsh environments that resulted in these kinds of problems with all of the rubber components (like cable housings)

after you have a chance get over this, and likely have a drink or three, you may rediscover the things that brought you to the car in the first place - or not

either way, the car will be in much better shape for you or the next guy

give it some time though, you might change your mind
