Speaking of the 458 Italia

What is the most effective thing from a detailing perspective that can be done to prevent sun damage/fade?

Most of the higher end sealers have UV protection built in. Other than using a good sealer, the only true way is to store the car indoors as often as possible.

I've been using Griot's Garage pain Sealant on our deep red 2003 Chrysler minivan, which always stays outside (I would just as soon make one of my kids stay outside all the time as leave the 968 outside <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ), and the paint has held up amazingly well under the assault from the brutal Central Texas sun. I checked the bottle, and it doesn't say anything about UV protection, though.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that Griot's actually manufactures anything, but rather puts their name on someone else's products...sorta like Porsche!! I'm not sure who makes the Griot's products but I know lots of people use them and they seem to produce decent results. Perhaps a little digging on some detailing forums may turn up some info on what the product is.

Bottom line is that if it works well and you're happy with what your using, then stick with it.

Returning to the subject at hand for a moment. I watched Top Gear last night and the episode I watched featured the 458 Italia. A really beautiful design when you see it from all sides in a video. Jeremy Clarkson put it through his usual routine. Blindingly quick and the engine sounds are music to my ears. The Stig put it round the test course at a lap time that was comparable to a FerrarI Enzo. Nice car!!!!!

Yup, seen that episode as well. Amazing performance indeed, and perhaps on camera , from the angles it was shot it did not look nearly as odd as it did in person when I saw it.. obviously many are split on this opinion, but to me it looked like a deformed toy . Yuk.

On the detail quasi-OT side of things, I saw an older Ferrari at a local body shop with a mirror shine on it comparable with that of a brand new showroom model's.. I asked the guy what they used and IIRC he called it PERMA PLATE. Claimed it's only available commercially to body shops, costs about

$ 200 for an application ( not including the labor charge ) but easily lasts a year or more in outside elements with the same level of brilliance. Darryl, any info on that ? Was that dude full of B.S. , or is that Perma-plate as good as they claim ?
