New to the 968!
#1

What's up guys,

Typical 90's car guy here, just scored a "please save me project". A 1992 968 black on black, 118 miles that has been sitting for 10 years!

As the local "Porsche guy" (I own a 1977 924) a friend of mine sent me some photos of his newly acquired 1992 968 "project" about a year ago. This thing had alot of potential and I was here to help... Fast forward to a few weeks ago I received a text. "I have to get this car out of my yard" So we made a deal and I was there the next morning to pick it up. As the price was low, I simply loaded it up and talked about the little effort he put in to get the car running. The details I had at that time,  was beautiful black on black 9.5/10 (honestly absolutely perfect), new battery, and an untouched engine bay.

After getting it home and cleaning it up a little It was discovered that the Fuel had been sitting just as long as the car. The strainer filter had come detached so I order the repair kit, new fuel pump, fuel lines and sending unit. After cleaning up the tank and installing the new parts she fired right up!

Time for a tune up and some diagnosing of other issues. Hints the Forum add! Glad to be apart of the group and hopefully I can find some help and help others where I can.

I have a YouTube page for my Go Kart racing as well as a few videos of my 1977 924 German spec race car. I will be uploading my process so feel free to follow along.

Welcome!

DO NOT START THAT CAR AGAIN UNTIL YOU HAVE REPLACED THE TIMING BELT AND BALANCE SHAFT BELT!!! TIME IS AS MUCH A FACTOR AS WEAR, AND YOUR TIME HAS RUN OUT.

Hope you enjoy the site, lots of good information here, and a great group of enthusiasts.

The belt was replaced at 115k and the car currently sits at 118k. Upon inspection it looks to be in great shape, zero signs of deterioration. BUT, I will follow direct! It can't be much harder than my 96 Eclipse/4g63

Thanks for the welcome!

Depends on the belt  .. if it’s Conti ( Continental ) based on everyting I’ve read on this forum ,  I would not take a chance on it no matter how good it looks on the outside , rubber tends to degrade from inside out as well .   Gates asserts their belts will last 5x to 10x other belts lifespan because of their unique construction , but IMO, although a lesser risk,  still not worth a $ 6,000 to $ 7,000 valve job repair cost gamble .

Welcome

I dont know where that comes from DS but Porsche have used them all as suppliers over the years

Dayco

Gates

Continental

And one more whos name escapes me

Belt replacement is pretty straight forward. The tensioner is a nightmare to compress, if you put it in a vice you will kill it

And the balance belt is far slacker than you would think possible. If it whines its to tight
