5 Speed vs 6 Speed
#1

I was curious how the ratios of the 944 and 968 transmissions compare, so I graphed them out, and was surprised by the results. I've always had the impression that the 6 speed's gears were closer together, and the graph clearly shows this is the case.

I was a little disappointed when I first drove a 6 speed that the higher gears weren't taller. I often skip every other gear when I’m driving the car casually. Am I correct in gathering that this transmission was designed with racing in mind?

maybe not racing, but certainly keeping the engine in its peak torque band - it's really a pretty sloppy box - makes for a smooth shifting street box, but a bit less than perfect for racing

i've got no issue with 6th, but i'd like to see 1st and second pushed up closer, all the gears squished together a bit more (like the powerhouse setup) and then a lower ratio ring and pinion - i'd gladly give up 10mph top end to gain better acceleration in 2nd through 5th, but then by raising the redline, and adding a few ponies, there might be no loss of top end

That's a pretty handy view, thanks for the graph.

All I know is:

- 3rd gear can get me all the way into "go directly to jail" zone

- 6th gear is GREAT for highway cruising and mpg

- 5th gear is top gear at the track anyway (about the same places as my 944 NA, but going a bit faster in the 968)

- The longer shift handle (versus 944) felt a little "truck like" initially - why so tall???
