3rd brake light
#1

I'm guess there is no way to repair the 3rd brake light sockets? I can wiggle the bulb in each socket and they work, but they won't stay on. I've tried to bend the tabs closer together with no success...$177.00 for the light seems like a lot for it.

This was originally a GM part, I don't know if anyone has looked at a GM replacement, but I would be curious if they offer it cheaper.

Let us know how you make out,

Jay

Yes, the same part was used on Corvette convertibles of that era. The same company, ASC, did the conversions.

The bulbs can be replaced with low-voltage lighting kit bulbs from the hardware store. 12v bi-pin xenon bulbs, I do not recall the wattage, 20 watt is probably OK. They can be bought from Amazon, $7 shipped for a six pack.

I think these are correct:

You could build up the pins on the bulbs with some solder, that might sort out your socket looseness. Wrap with a fine gauge copper wire if need be and then wick in the solder. You could also wire in a mess of LEDs.

Or you could do the conversion over to all LED's.

Definitly the way to go. 30 minutes of soldering and a 1W current limit resistor. Last a lifetime without any connection issues.

In the old days it was Radio Shack but now no one stocks parts. You will have to go online and visit an LED supply site or a commercial electronics parts supply house - of which you get thousands to choose from

I purchased leds from superbrightleds.com and put them directly into the original brake light.
It worked great, no problems.
