lol - that sucks. ironically i am now going through my collection, and either drinking it or tossing it, so as not to move it over to ireland. i don't want to subject it to the changing temperatures and abuse that such a move would entail. no worries. it just means i get to go tasting a lot more in italy, and buy more wine. we are probably popping over this spring. it also means that i finally clear out all of the stuff that has turned out to be disappointing, compared to what i thought it would be when i was in the tasting room. the stuff we got from tablas creek is a prime example of a wine tasting better in the tasting room than it did when we got it home. the wines are much sweeter than i remembered. we don't like sweet wines. i am basically using that for windshield cleaner now. there are a couple of others from paso that i have just opened and tossed straight away, and many more where we never finished the bottle. it's sad, because we had such high hopes for that region 15 years ago when we first started going up there, but now, with so many wineries popping up, it seems that the idea of making great wines has been replaced with the idea of selling wine. it is incredibly depressing, particularly since we have a pretty substantial paso connection, and can't really take advantage of it. i get it, but for those of us who are not price sensitive about wines, it makes it really hard to sift through all the mediocre stuff to get to the good stuff. it's getting to the point where i won't even look at a paso wine that is priced under $80.
going forward, we will only be selecting wines that can sit for at least 5 years. that seems to rule out a lot of wines, and almost all paso robles wines we have tried. it seems that they are, as mentioned by chris above, designed to be consumed right away. that's fine, but not what we are looking for. i already have wines for every day that i can pick up when i want them. we have basically 3 "go to" wines that we like and buy a lot of. i am only looking for special occasion wines now.
that really makes waiting lists a non starter for me. it's good to hear that you still get the chance to say "no" but for me having to even think about dealing with it is just more complicated than i am willing to deal with at this time.
lol - if these are the problems with which i have to contend...................
