2015 Vintage
#1

The first grapes of this harvest are arriving on Wednesday. Pinot Grigio from which we produce our Pinot Grigio Ramato. This year harvest is beginning earlier the last year and almost 3 weeks earlier than a typical year. The impacts from out long draught are very evident, overall yields are down, clusters are smaller, berries are smaller.

I know of a couple of growers who won't have a harvestable crop. Grape vines are a riparian plant and are capable of putting down roots as deep as 30 feet. The vines will survive, but part of that survival includes very low fruit production.

Smaller berries are highly desirable for red wines. You pay a premium to get grapes from old vines or from vines grown at altitude because both conditions result in small berries and concentrated flavors. The same is true for grapes grown in a drought.

I've tasted some of our 2013 and 2014 reds , both are drought years. The vines avery good and will develop nicely with some bottle age, Stay tuned.
