2009 German Autofest Oct 3&4
#1

the annual Ventura German Autofest is again being held this year at the same place as always - this has traditionally been the largest Porsche show in the country - this will be the second year with the new promoter, after Bob Campbell stepped down

been there three times, the last two were progressivley worse then the first ( a lot less cars, 90% of the cars were 911s.. blah, yawn, ..) so i had given up on the thought of ever going again, but seems it might be revived from its coma, so i could plan one of my regular l.a. escape weekends to coincide with the shaw and see what's in store...

yeah - i missed last year for the same reasons - it had waned year by year - the new promoter got in very late last year, and consequently did not have a lot of vendor subscription - i am giving them the benefit of the doubt that they could have done better given more time - hopefully this year will be back to the high standards of years gone by

i'll stay on top of this and keep everybody updated

i have now spoken at length to the promoter of the event - great conversation

this looks good - they have added a bunch of new stuff, including a beer garden and live music - they are working on an autocross too

we have a special area set aside for us

i'll post more details about times and such as soon as i have everything nailed down

Hell Bob "Flash", sorry to have missed the detail day. So for this Oct 3-4 weekend, is the group planning to go on Saturday or Sunday ?

Thanks,

Saturday for me. Could be different this year, but in the past on Sundays the place tends to " thin out" very quickly and focuses primarily on the junkyard sale ( swap meet ) sale of mostly old 911 parts , trinkets and trash.

i have now gotten some info back from the promoter of the event

there are now over 40 vendors booked - the swap meet is doing well - there will be a german beer and food garden - there will be live music

our rendezvous on site is to be at 7:45am - we will assemble in the parking lot first, and then go in together to get to our spot to park

i think it is $11 to get in

my plan is to depart from my house no later than 5am, run up the 405 and then take the coastal route from santa monica up to ventura - it only adds about 20 minutes, but is a nicer drive than straight up the 101 - we won't be making any stops, so the best plan is to contact me and let me know if you will be joining along the way to caravan together - i can then tell you where on the road you should stop and at what time so that you can see us pass you and join in

we have plenty of room here for those coming from down south and don't want to get up at 3am to make it up there in time - ring me up and we can figure that out

i need to get a head count though so the promoter can make the appropriate space available, and not have too little or too much - please respond here or to me so i can do that

don't worry about what you think are shortcomings of your car - it's more about getting together than showing the car - just be there

ok - ever have one of those days where everything you know is wrong?

turns out the swap meet is only on sunday
the people's choice is on saturday
the concours is on sunday

not sure why they did that, but now we need to figure out which day to go to

i am inclined now to do sunday - everything else would remain the same - only the day would shift

thoughts?

I may have to skip this , I can only go on Saturday and even then I would not be able to get there much before 10 or 11 am. Also, I can stick around for about 4 hrs max and then would leave by 3 or so..
On Sunday I might be able to stop in for an hour, maybe b/w 11 and noon, otherwise it's a no-go for me

Sigh..

i am really fine either way, and will bow to the masses on this one - i was merely reminded about the swap meet being on sunday (not that i ever find anything there)

so, whatever everybody wants to do, but i need to get a real head count in the next couple of days

I can go on Sunday. Same 7:45 arrival time in Ventura? I have to be home around 2p or so. I figure a few hours of running around there is good enough. It's always nice getting out for an early drive... Let me know what time you're heading up and maybe we can caravan?

yes, times would be the same if we do sunday - i can do either day (though i'd like to avoid having to do both - that's a LOT of driving from here)

interest me.
