2007 Stags Leap Cabernet..$41 at Sams Club
#1

I've been buying the 2006 vintage for about $69. I saw the 2007 bottles at Sams for $41 but can't yet find a rating. Anybody know if the 2007 year was good in Napa? How about the price?

picked this quote from an online source,

...the 2007 vintage of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons has produced wines of stellar quality.

The weather offered perfect growing conditions ,all over the state of California, but especially

in Napa Valley. Mild summer, with few heat spikes, and cool evenings. The wines are balanced yet

voluptuous with good tannic structure, lower than usual alcohol levels, and decent acidity levels...

Are you talking Stags Leap Wine Cellars (growing blocks Cask-23, SLV, Fay, Artemis would be identified on the label) or their neighbor Stags Leap Winery (known for their Petite Syrah)?

Stags Leap Wine Cellars (growing blocks Cask-23, SLV, Fay, Artemis would be identified on the label) are some of my absolute favorites, as well as Chimney Rock right next door.

My 50th Birthday bash next year will include a vertical of Chimney Rock beginning with a magnum of 1990 Cab....(see what year we can get up to before keeling over <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ).

I have been dilligently buying and storing 2007's....Pinot Noir more than Cabs.

Jay

Vintage 2007 should be an outstanding year for wines produced in Napa/Sonoma and elsewhere is California as well. If you are planning on storing some wine for an extended period you should purchase enough to allow you to periodically taste the wine as time progresses. Americans don't typically buy wines with the intent of laying them down for an extended period of time. Consequently, wines are being produced to be drinkable at the time of purchase and while some may improve with age, many don't. Some producers employ micro oxidation which to my palate artificially ages the wine, giving the impression of age in a young wine. I'm not sure how micro oxidation impacts the aging potential of wine. It seems logical to me that it would reduce the aging potential. We don't employ micro oxidation in the winery where I work so I haven't a lot of experience with it. We prefer the traditional barrel and bottle aging process.

I recently opened a 2006 Russian river Pinot Noir from a very well known producer and found the wine to be over the hill, oxidized. The cork was solid. I also opened a 1992 Siver Oak Cabernet last Christmas and found that to be over the hill as well. I know that both of these wines received proper storage.

I guess I have been pretty lucky so far, have not had any vinegar and only one bottle in recent memory (a 1985 South African, Boschendal Reserve) that I let sit so long that it was well past due, but still drinkable.

Last birthday I drank a 1993 Girard Reserve Cab (another Stag's Leap Region wine), it was excellent !

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best next March, if things get sticky, I'll just open a 2007 Chimney Rock and work my way backwards...same result <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

"beginning with a magnum of 1990 Cab"

Shouldn't that be at least a '92-'95 Cab to keep it in the 968 forum? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Wines from the Stags Leap, Mt. Veeder, Howell Mt., Spring Mt. districts should age well if they are properly made. Fruit from these districts generally has well balanced acidity and a good tannin, so if the wine is made properly, it should age very well. Just make sure that you store it properly.

I have a particular passion for that specific corner in Napa. Strag's Leap, Chimney Rock, Girard (now, Rudd), and S. Anderson (now Cliff Lede)....Silverado Trail and Oakville Road.

I could spend the rest of my life drinking just the wines from those places, but I hope to find another corner I enjoy just as much. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

You are planning to come out to the Paso Wine run, right? I have some wine to pick up on Sunday at what I consider to be one of the best if not the best Rhone style wine producer in California. You are welcome to tag alone if you like.

Its the Stags Leap Winery. I see this Cab in restaurants all the time for $99/bottle. I thought the $41 tag for 2007 might be a good investment. Also, how long would you all keep this wine before drinking?

To quote the sage advise of Chris Vais....

"If you are planning on storing some wine for an extended period you should purchase enough to allow you to periodically taste the wine as time progresses. "

"Wines from the Stags Leap, Mt. Veeder, Howell Mt., Spring Mt. districts should age well if they are properly made. I would add, that the wine handlers at Sam's Club might be a bit "indifferent" to this quality wine, open one right away and see if it was damaged in transport...I bought a "great" bottle of wine when I was in Florida last year at Sam's and it had turned.
