Replacement for Potenza RE730s?

About 7 (?!) years ago, Wheel Enhancement put RE730s on my 968. They're finally wearing out (sidewall cracks). No, I don't drive my car enough.



Since the RE730s have been cycled into the dustbin of product history, what's a comparable tire? Since I live in Culver City now, I'll probably take it back to Wheel Enhancement...



Also, I have the 16" wheels on my Cabriolet. Is it worth it to have them swapped for the 17" wheels? I currently have the C2 wheels, and actually like them a lot, and if it's not a night-and-day difference in some aspect, I"ll probably keep them...

the 750 is a nice tire



while i have no long term reports yet, as they are only 300 miles old, the sumitomos we put on the white cab are a lot better than i expected



17s will give you better stability and handling - they also fill the wheel well better - it does come with a higher price tag



if you want the softest ride, stay with 16 - if you want the least expensive thing, stay with 16

If you like what you have, avoid the unneeded expense of putting on bigger wheels and tires.



IMHO, avoid the Yokohama ES 100. Not bad for the money but they are NOISY.



With a cab the 17's maybe a little harsh.

I have Yokohama AS430's on my Cab. They came with the car and were brand new. I don't have any complaints with them and a DE instructor who drove the car seemed to really like them.

RE-730's were one of my favorite tires. They felt very responsive w/ stiff sidewalls, had lots of grip in dry and wet conditions, plus very long tread life - seemed like the perfect performance street tire. I just bought new tires and was about to pull the trigger on their replacement RE-750's but the front 225/45-17's are NLA. According to the Tire Rack rep I spoke to, these tires are being phased out because the RE-760 is due out sometime this year but no ETA yet. A big difference between RE-760 and the previous RE-730/750 w/ directional tread pattern will be an asymmetrical tread design ala Michelin PS2 which is the benchmark performance street at $200/tire.



With RE-760 not coming out for a while I weighed my decision between Yokohama ES100 [cheap w/ 280 treadwear] and Michelin PS2 [expensive w/ 220 teadwear] but discovered that the ES100 225/45-17 is ALSO NLA! This tire has been replaced by the Yokohama S-drive treadwear 300 which is supposed to be better than ES100 in every way including road noise that everyone complains about. So I decided to purchase a set of these after reading some reviews by Porsche owners that dry grip is comparable to Michelin PS2 for 2/3 the cost. They should last a lot longer than the PS2 and I've always loved Yokohama's on my 944/968 cars.



My S-drives are being installed today along w/ alignment and new castor blocks so I'll report on wet and dry weather performance soon.

I am just finishing up a very satisfying 20k on my RE750s. I was impressed. They have maintained both grip and relatively low noise almost to the end. A great tire for a daily driver. Probably not aggressive enough if you are doing more than an occasional DE or AX. Shame if they are already gone



Flash - what Sumitomo did you go with? The HTZ III? The Tire Rack test is positive, but with such a new tire. I am in the market for a set of 17s for my new rims.



To me 16s, even with + size tires, just look lost in the rear wheel well.

18's rule.

If you want a soft ride, try a Lincoln or Cadillac, or try a pound or so less tire pressure.

I have a set of Bridgestone RE 960AS on my Jetta. They are 225/45/17's. They have to be the quietest tire I have ever had on my car. It also is a little on the softer side when it comes to cornering but the ride is very good. I also have a set of Pirelli P Zero Nero MS 235/45/17 on my Audi Avant. Very good all around tire imho. Good grip in dry or wet. Deals with standing water pretty well not that you will have much of that in Socal. I am looking to get the Bridgestone RE-01R's. Tire Rack has them ranked #1 in their test for that class of tires.
